3G Modem Connections

Summarized by Denmasbroto

If we talk about 3G Modem Connections, we should know about basic principles of 3G, Modem and the connection.
Here I will describe each parts and hope you can take a basic knowledge, how to use the 3G Modem and get the benefits of using it.

3G is the third generation of tele standards and technology for mobile networking, superseding 2.5G. It is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards under the IMT-2000.
3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment.
Additional features also include HSPA data transmission capabilities able to deliver speeds up to 14.4 Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s on the uplink.
High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is a 3G (third generation) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) family, which allows networks based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity.
Current HSDPA deployments support down-link speeds of 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.4 Mbit/s. Further speed increases are available with HSPA+, which provides speeds of up to 42 Mbit/s downlink.
Unlike IEEE 802.11 networks, which are commonly called Wi-Fi or WLAN networks, 3G networks are wide-area cellular telephone networks that evolved to incorporate high-speed Internet access and video telephony. IEEE 802.11 networks are short range, high-bandwidth networks primarily developed for data. (Source : http://en.wikipedia.org)

Modem (Modulator-Demodulator)
Modem is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information.
The most familiar example is a voice band modem that turns the digital 1s and 0s of a personal computer into sounds that can be transmitted over the telephone lines of Plain Old Telephone Systems (POTS), and once received on the other side, converts those 1s and 0s back into a form used by a USB, Ethernet, serial, or network connection.
Modems are generally classified by the amount of data they can send in a given time, normally measured in bits per second, or "bps". They can also be classified by Baud, the number of times the modem changes its signal state per second.
Baud is not the modem's speed in bit/s, but in symbols/s. The baud rate varies, depending on the modulation technique used. Original Bell 103 modems used a modulation technique that saw a change in state 300 times per second. They transmitted 1 bit for every baud, and so a 300 bit/s modem was also a 300-baud modem. However, casual computerists confused the two. A 300 bit/s modem is the only modem whose bit rate matches the baud rate. A 2400 bit/s modem changes state 600 times per second, but due to the fact that it transmits 4 bits for each baud, 2400 bits are transmitted by 600 baud, or changes in states.
Faster modems are used by Internet users every day, notably cable modems and ADSL modems. In telecommunications, "radio modems" transmit repeating frames of data at very high data rates over microwave radio links. Some microwave modems transmit more than a hundred million bits per second. Optical modems transmit data over optical fibers. Most intercontinental data links now use optical modems transmitting over undersea optical fibers. Optical modems routinely have data rates in excess of a billion (1x109) bits per second. One kilobit per second (kbit/s or kb/s or kbps) as used in this article means 1000 bits per second and not 1024 bits per second. For example, a 56k modem can transfer data at up to 56,000 bits (7kB) per second over the phone line. (Source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modem)

3G Modem Device

3G Modem
3G Modem is a modem that work on 3G Network, this device convert the 0s and 1s of personal computer into 3G Network and connect to internet clouds. The data is modulates and transmitted to the internet through 3G Network and in the opposite way, data from internet demodulated form 3G Network into personal computer. With 3G Modem, a high speed connection to the internet from personal computer is possible.

3G Modem Connection
This picture is shown about connection of 3G Modem. Usually Personal Computer connect to 3G Modem there are several ways : USB Connection, PCMCIA Card Connection, PCI Bus Connection (Desktop PC), or embedded 3G Modem (for latest Laptop)
3G Modem can be various devices : 3G Modem only devices or it can be a mobile telephone included 3G Modem capability.
The picture bellow shown a connection symbol for Mobile phone Nokia E90 as a 3G/HSDPA Modem.

E90 PC Suite 3G Modem

For Nokia device usually using PC Suite to make a connection, or we can use a default windows modem connection for Windows Operating System
